If I had to choose a parenting label...

If I had to choose a parenting label, I would make it up and call it Capacity Parenting.

It wouldn't be a parenting style, but a way of looking at a child (or parent's!) behaviour and asking: "What's on their plate? I wonder what tipped them over the edge? What's making it harder to cope with the current demands on them?"

The capacity lens won't be the most helpful lens in every situation. Other lenses are available, and over the next few weeks we will explore what other lenses we might want to try on.

Sometimes the most helpful lens is not necessarily 100% 'true', but it's the one that helps us respond with compassion and to make a change where necessary.

When your child's behaviour frustrates you, which explanation do you reach for first? Is it the same when you're rested as when you're depleted?

This week, when something goes sideways, simply notice which lens you've picked up. You don't have to swap it for another. Noticing is enough.

You are a unique parent with unique children in a unique situation. What works for me may not work for you. Take what lands. Discard the rest.

I hope you have a steadier Sunday.
